Zarco standing proud
Zarco is regarded as the discoverer of the island of Madeira and this statue is in central Funchal. João Gonçalves Zarco (1390 – 1471) he is believed to have explored the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo around 1418 to 1420 and commenced the settlement of Madeira in 1425.
