Many farmers grow vines for wine for local consumption. These growers are often referred to as Direct Producers who use unauthorised grapes such as Jacquet and Herbemont.
These wines are not usually commercially bottled and are known locally as Americano wines. While usually for family and friends they can be found in some bars.
Some can be quite fruity and refreshing giving testament to the skill of the indigenous wine makers, some are best avoided. IVBAM is working hard to encourage growers to produce wines from grapes that it recognises and approves which then can be used as a denominated Madeira table wine.
